Vitamins and health have gone together for as long as scientists began to identify the role of vitamins in our body. Vitamins in your body act as either a catalyst or in conjunction with an enzyme to catalyze chemical processes.
Needed only in small quantities, these are none-the-less essential to good health. Prior to 1900 all vitamins needed by the body was obtained through the foods eaten. This means that if a wide variety of foods was not available then a deficiency in a certain vitamin could (and did) occur.
In the mid 18th century, Scottish doctor James Lind discovered that eating limes and other citrus foods prevented scurvy. This led to the British Royal Navy adopting the policy of providing its sailors with lemons and limes to eat during voyages. This led to the nickname Limey for British sailors.
In the late 19th century scientists discovered that eating unpolished rice helped to prevent beriberi.
Vitamins are either water soluble or fat soluble.
Nutritional supplements containing vitamins are widely available. Use care when choosing your supplement provider. Vitamin supplements should be pharmaceutical grade and thus may cost more than the cheap discount store variety. However, if a vitamin is not in the form used by the body, then it is, at best, a waste of money, or worse, could have unwanted side effects.
How Much is Enough?Since vitamins are available within the foods we eat, you should first try to meet your vitamin needs through your diet. However, it takes a lot of time to look up the nutritional value of the foods you eat. An online meal planner, like Vita-Bot, can show you where you are deficient in necessary nutrients, and actually makes recommendations on how to achieve that balance.
