When it comes to health vitamins quality cannot be over emphasized. Of course quality in ingredients and quality of manufacture can cost more. But the old adage, “you get what you pay for,” is so true here. But so is the saying, “you don’t get what you don’t pay for.” Meaning, sometimes cheap price means cheap ingredients are used or it could be a cheap manufacturing process that produces product fast but is degrading to the active ingredients. Or worse, both of these could be true.
The next time you hear on the news about some “miracle” compound, discovered in the Amazon jungle and researched at the Mayo Clinic, that can cure this or that, or even stop aging all together, watch how quickly it is available as a supplement. It is amusing to watch companies that market a health food vitamin suddenly tout the “miracle” in their health vitamin, without, first, telling you how much is necessary to affect a change in your well-being, and second, how much is actually in their super-duper product.
Always look for a company that creates health vitamins that have efficacious amounts of the active ingredients (efficacious means enough to have the desired effect).
Some companies that manufacture cheap supplements also use less reliable plant material. The active amount of any phytochemical is plant dependent, even within a species. Soil quality, amount of rain, sunlight all contribute to the amount of active ingredients in a plant.
The better approach is to find a company that, instead, uses standardized herbal extracts. This guarantees that batch E is equivalent to batch C in quality. You benefit by knowing that the supplement works as expected, every time.
Of course, the best way to get your vitamins is in your daily nutrition. Vitamins vary from food to food so a menu or meal planning tool that has all available food nutrient information and the “intelligence” to inform you when you are getting enough, or worse, not meeting your minimum daily requirements.
A tool like Vita-Bot (check out the demo here at The Nutrition Guru!) has those features built right in. You benefit in knowing that your meals are balanced and when you should or should not supplement with health vitamins.
